Hi John, I now realise that since mid 2008 I have been making fundamental choices for what I want to be doing with my life now and have had a ball! After a very tricky first six months in 2008 in which I was an actor without actually doing any acting (i.e. waiting for acting work) I decided that the reason I became an actress was the thrill and challenge of performing live on stage (TV work is great as well but for different reasons).
I have chosen my last 2 acting projects and the next one I will be doing because I really want to pursue them for their own merits. The first one was 'profit share' and we made a profit. The present one is my first panto and I have learned a lot about myself as a performer and how much better I work when I am with other people rather than on my own. The next project will be a challenge and a real stretch, taking me well out of my comfort zone. I am having fun again and feel alive and full of mischief.
You are right, I no longer worry about a ‘career’, I just pick an interesting project and do it, see where it’s landed me and pick the next one. Life is for living now not waiting for a future that may never happen.

John, that Dan Pink book sounds great - since I'm currently well into comics, it will be one of my next purchases.

I've been making fundamental career decisions over the course of 2008, and although it hasn't lead to massive riches, it has certainly lead to a very happy 2008. Even better, I'm not at all struggling financially, in fact I've been just as well off making fundamental decisions as I was when I didn't (and told myself "I bette rget some more freelance work").

I'll join your experiment, and I'm excited to see where we are this time next year!

John

You have just made me feel a whole lot better about my non-plans for 2009.

I was talking to a marketing 'expert' at the beginning of December and he was patronising when I told him I hadn't yet made plans for my business next year.

Though at least I did immediately plan that it wouldn't include him...

So now I can just shrug my shoulders and tell people I'm a business fundamentalist. Cool!
